I've noticed this a few times, but I have never seen a good sized thread about it, nor any good information.
In the gameplay video and in several screen shots we see things like "Chipped Square Topaz" and "Chipped Star Amethyst" .Wtf is with the different shapes on them? Do they do something different than each other, or its it only for looks? Can they be combined with each other (assuming we have a way to up our gems like in D2) as long as they are the same type of gem, i.e. topaz. Or does it have to match the shape too?

Assuming we have sockets back, which I thought I saw something about there not being sockets, will the gems work in the same way? Will we be able to unsocket this time with out destroying the gem?
A lot of this I'm sure is stuff not decided upon yet, but I do believe Bashiok stated before that the things they show off in the videos/screens are meant to be there, to give us a taste of what is in the game.So Bashiok, care to enlighten us on these gems, since you guys seem to be showing quite a few of them off!

Ah, I had actually completely misunderstood what you guys were saying. Not surprising, I'm easily confused. ;)
So, the named shape component on the gems was left over from an old system that may or may not be used. Similar to the super secret amazing talisman, they're
old design remnants that peek through and we're not quite sure how they'll fit in the final game - if at all.
